Thursday afternoon we threw caution and budgets to the wind and went on a 1 hour helicopter trip to Hells Gate. We flew over Tarawera volcano to see the huge 17 kilometre long fissure created when its 3 peaks erupted in 1886. We flew on further and landed at Hells Gate a large bubbling cauldron of sulphur, mud and silica. A real Dantes inferno.
